I consider myself to be a private person. There are certain aspects of my life that I don’t want the whole world knowing. However, I’m finding that since I’ve been in between career opportunities I’ve been much more open about my life online. I started my own blog, added Twitter, and joined various sites to connect and network with people. That’s all out in the open now. I am a self-proclaimed obsessive self-Googler or ego-surfer. I Google myself approximately twice a week. Is that odd? Since I have a rare name, most of the search results are relevant however there are a few Jenny Huynhs that sneak into my search. Everything I do online can now be tracked whether it be signing up for a Meetup group or posting a comment to a blog.

Big Game Hunting's method of approaching C-level executives is based on 4 premises which may seem to fly in the face of sales wisdom:
1. Ask the assistant to schedule the appointment
2. Send an executive briefing BEFORE asking for an appointment
3. Have telephone meetings rather than face-to-face
4. Being sent to someone on their team is an expression of interest
Gaining entree into complex, Fortune 1000-sized companies requires major account development strategies and tactics.

I'm getting the feeling that the world has been transformed by the digital age - but nobody is listening. And they might be right to not be listening.
The masses of the population don't know and don't care about the digital "community".
The masses lack of interest is understandable as the shift has no sustaining impact on their daily lives. Do we really need to connect to all our old friends - why not spend more time with our current neighbors.

Five of the most feared words in today’s culture are "your position is being eliminated" and more and more qualified marketing professionals are hearing them. Certainly, news reports of massive layoffs at once-viable corporations aren’t doing much to buoy the national morale, so what should you do when you hear these words?

Millions of ads are designed to seduce target groups to read their messages, to like their contents and to buy their offers. A few years ago, when I was a manager of a Department of Communications, we always had discussions about measuring the effect of our ads. In general there are three possible dimensions for which you can determine goals as indicators for the performance of your advertisement:

Wow, Twitter has taken the world by storm. Since Ashton Kutcher topped one million (beating CNN and raising a lot of money in the process), it has been the subject of almost every medium imaginable. I must get five Twitter subject headings every day via email. Webinars, seminars, how-tos, why fors, it goes on and on.

The other night, NBC announced it was cancelling the show My Name is Earl, which happens to be one of my all-time favourites. How did I, the avid fan, find out? The Twitosphere started tweeting frantically with a #SaveEarl hashtag, which appeared at the side of my Twitter homepage as a trending topic (meaning it’s one of the most talked-about items on Twitter). Shocked by the news, I clicked on the link, and took a look at what people were saying. By the time I was 20 tweets down, another 252 had been made, according to a Twitter notification. Angry fans abound, the "Save Earl" movement was rocketing through the Twitosphere at a blindly fast pace.

There’s so much fodder here for discussion, I have to chunk it up. I had at first aimed to zero in on the business uses of social media. But then the mom from Shoreview who is also a marketer has a point – she has ‘almost teenagers’ and needs to know what’s what for both business and home. And I have heard from others who just want to personally sort it out. So we will start with generalities just to make sure everyone knows what’s what, and go from there. Oh, and this is a two-parter, because nobody likes to read that much at once online.

Zehnder Communications finished a survey this week that found 37% of people on Twitter and Facebook do NOT follow a brand. Further, of those that do, only 42% had ever conversed with a brand they follow.
A quick shout out to Tom Martin, social media guy and president of Zehnder Communications, who was kind enough to share his results with me. You can learn more about what Tom learned from his survey by checking his blog early next week.
