Thank you for all the comments & emails about my last article To Tweet or Not to Tweet http://bit.ly/B3Zc1. I wanted to expand a little bit.
Twitter is extremely powerful and I am a huge advocate of Twitter... All social media platforms actually see its power too because every one of them have incorporated their own status updates. Facebook, LinkedIn, Plaxo etc. That is all because of Twitter.
There is an alarming rate of 60% of people who get on Twitter who sign up… get off... A very large percentage of people who do not get off, have less than 5 followers and are not active. They are not reading tweets or posting. 90% of tweets come from the top 10% of users. It is very top heavy. So the active users either really get it & take advantage of the power or they respond to the high volume of followers.
Why do people get off? It is so easy on the surface, but terribly misunderstood. Yes it has its own unusual terms and language. That cannot be what people misunderstand though. Like I said, if you are on LinkedIn or Facebook, it runs exactly like the status update feature. The RT (retweet) is just like a forwarded email, the # (hashtag) is basically like a bookmark to aggregate for search. It really is fairly simple in tactic.
The issue stems from creating content... Anyone who is a content creator needs a strategy. They have to have a plan. No one wants to take the time to do that. Lets get that plan started.
1. First Determine Your Audience… Try to pick a very specific niche. Be a leader of that niche. Know what they “look like”… their traits. This will help in the following steps.
2. Develop Content Around That Audience… What keeps that audience up at night? It needs to be directed toward them and their needs. Do NOT talk about you or your product. Be a trusted resource. Share your original content or share articles. Because you only get 140 characters, make sure you use a URL shortner like bit.ly (do not type www before, just type exactly like it)
3. How Often... I always say if you tweet too often you do not become more visible, instead you become invisible. There is no magic number. I would suggest a few times a day at the most. A couple of times a week at the least.
4. Balance of Tweets… 40-60% of the tweets need to be value oriented content. A cool article, an original article (non sales), upcoming event they might like or anything of real value. 20% or so can be responding to other tweeters who mention you etc. 10% can be self promotion (1 out of every 10) and 10% needs to be fun & social.
Look for the next post next week that will answer the other half of all the questions, which was around is there actual business being made through Twitter…
