I've been researching and writing a book on social media monetization and have seen upwards of 90% of professionals failing to get results from little or significant online efforts. After looking at over 400 professionals / businesses in the social media space and reading hundreds of how-to articles there's huge gaps. Why?

This past week I attended an awesome conference for growing small business, hosted by Network Solutions and The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business. The conference was particularly great because I met with fellow industry members and bloggers in the area.

We all sat in the same section of the room (where the power cords were) and were tweeting to each other throughout the day discussing the presentations and panelists.

Personally, I find that I get a lot out of conferences by actively participating in them through the use of Twitter. I get to connect and meet industry professionals during breaks and it adds to my understanding of the material in the conference.

Taking Online Networking Offline

The essential goal of social networking is to connect with people; online or offline. I’ve noticed that people are more willing than ever to meet with people they only know from the Internet. Remember when your parents used to tell you to be careful online because you never knew who was actually writing you messages? What happened to those days?
