Steve - I have to agree with Sam, the internal traffic trick is a new one - thanks.

I also like your mention of longtail (keyword phrased) search terms. I think this is one of the least know, but obvious SEO techniques available.

Janet Barclay

I use all of these techniques, but am still learning how to select strong keyphrases instead of (or in addition to) keywords.

Directories are another good source of backlinks, especially regional and industry-specific directories. Just stay away from those link farms!

Wow some very good tips. There is one additional tip that I would like to add and that is about having a URL and page names that consist of your most important long tail keywords. I.E. (www.all-about-books.com/short-stories.html). You can read a short article about this by clicking on my name.

Thanks for the tips.

@ McLaughlin: I wouldn't say a search for Apply computers should never point to your site. You never know. Maybe someone who likes Apple Computers also likes gardening and turns out to be a hot prospect for your gardening course or other service. It's more unlikely, but it's still a link.

Ultimately, I get what you're saying. Focus on targeted links that have the same or similar theme as your website or blog.

Don't forget the importance of Latent Semantic Indexing. If I have a gardening site and I write a post about pruning an apple tree - a search for Apple computer 'should' never point to my site. But, a search for gardening tools could logically point to me.
If my entire website is about gardening and I have one post about pruning an apple tree, my site should appear higher on Google than a person that writes 10 posts about apples on a golfing site.

A few steps, wow Steve I learned so much from this article. I never really have learned how to link or understand channels yet. However, Google does give classes on video to teach this. Great job and I enjoyed this article. Darlene

Cheers Sam - loved the post you submitted on Linked-In as well.

Steve.... Great article. I have to say that I didn't know the tip about internal traffic.

I will be sure to consider that in my future articles.
